Kim Nipp ✿

Product Designer. Illustrator.
Animator. Communicator.

I'm a product designer with a multidisciplinary background in scientific visualization, motion design & illustration. I’m also an expert in translating complex scientific and healthcare topics into visually engaging and immersive media. I immensely enjoy exploring how game and design techniques in emerging digital media can be used to create something inspiring, educational, and high-value for users. But beyond that, I help empower teams and organizations to support the launch of innovative and high-impact design experiences. I offer creative services in product design, scientific and creative illustration, 2D and 3D motion design, and game asset design.

At the moment, I can be found freelancing on various design & illustration projects - illustrating a neuroscience textbook and supporting UI design projects.

Currently based in Vancouver, Canada. I am also open for opportunities to help support your next dream design project too!

The Story So Far

How I Ventured into Art & Design
(And It Started With Neuroscience)

I originally got my start in design through a very unique route - while studying behavioural neuroscience at the University of British Columbia. During this time, I worked as a research assistant in a neuroendocrinology lab, helping to investigate the effectiveness of specific antidepressants on postpartum depression. Fascinated by the visual worlds within brain cells and neuroscience, I took an interest in how science and research also lends itself to art and design. I began collaborating with professors and academic institutions, publishing illustrations for textbooks, and using experimental digital media to create biopsychology educational resources for Youtube, and edX.org.

This led me to continue my graduate studies at the MSc. Biomedical Communications program at the University of Toronto under the Faculty of Medicine. This program is currently the only accredited graduate medical illustration program in Canada. At this institution, I honed my research skills and visual design skills in medical illustration, animation, and product design principles for healthcare and educational applications. All of these paths eventually led me to the diverse and intersectional worlds of research and product design, where I have continued to work professionally in for the past several years.

The Story Now

Since then I've been able to collaborate with a variety of clients across multiple disciplines, helping them to launch innovative and engaging creative designs to reach and educate worldwide audiences. Some notable projects have included: UX/UI design and 3D modelling for a cell visualization tool built in Unity, UI design recommendations for software-as-service (SaaS) healthcare applications, and published creative illustrations for a variety of clients in both the educational and creative sectors.

Cozy Creative Art

In my free time, I am also in the midst of launching Forest Atom, a cute little online handcrafted stationery and art print shop full of my original designs, mostly inspired by nature and my mischievous calico cat.

Always Looking to Improve!

I recently redesigned this website so I'm in the process of moving some of my showcase projects from my old web page to this one and improving on its interaction. I'm always looking to improve, so if you spot anything that's inaccessible, please feel free to let me know - I would be delighted to fix it :)
